Policy Effective Date: January 1, 2009


Each person who is a member of a U.S. district, who is:

  • An ordained elder, deacon, or district-licensed minister, or lay person and is
    • Serving in a full-time and full-livelihood* assignment
    • An employee of a Nazarene church or Nazarene church agency
    • Active at work
    • Younger than age 75

*Full-time service is defined as serving no fewer than 30 hours per week for no fewer than 30 weeks each calendar year in Nazarene churches or district offices on U.S. districts that pay Pensions and Benefits Fund allocations. Full-livelihood is defined as deriving no less than 50% of personal net income for the calendar year from the local church or district being served. For Evangelists, full-time and full-livelihood service is defined as no fewer than 30 Sundays or 26 revival events per calendar year (as defined by the General Board of the Church of the Nazarene) in Nazarene churches on U.S. districts that pay Pensions and Benefits Fund allocations.


You may purchase coverage for yourself in increments of $50,000 up to a maximum of $200,000. Dependent coverage can be purchased as follows, not to exceed ½ of the amount of the primary coverage purchased:

  • If the spouse is the only eligible dependent—in increments of $25,000
  • If children** are the only eligible dependents—in increments of $7,500
  • If both a spouse and children* are eligible dependents—in increments of $20,000 (spouse) and $5,000 (children)

**Children are eligible if unmarried, dependent (including stepchildren and legally adopted and foster children), and between the ages of 14 days and 19 years. Newly born children are automatically covered upon reaching 14 days of age. Children who are full-time students and dependent upon the insured member for at least one-half support remain eligible to age 23.

*This worksheet is a very simplified form only giving rough estimates. For instance, it only uses interest earned on the life insurance benefit paid to dependents as annual income for them. Their principal remains intact. Also, the worksheet includes no assumptions for annual inflation. More elaborate worksheets are available from various sources such as Fidelity Investments which will aid you with more detailed calculations.

Thanks to contributions by their churches to the P&B Fund, most Nazarene ministers receive basic life insurance coverage at no cost to them. We offer a social work service that gives you telephone access to a Master’s level social worker if you:

  • Are permanently and totally disabled

Our social workers offer:

  • Education about coverage
  • Referrals to local and national programs that may provide housing, food, insurance, prescription and financial assistance, emotional support and referrals to behavioral health services
